SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Professor Samdhong Rinpoche was born in 5th of November,1939 in Tibet, in Nagdug village in the province of Kham. He had accomplished all steps of the monastic ordination and has now attained Bhikshu Mahathero status.

He started his monastic studies in Tibet in 1951 at the University of Drepung and continued his higher studies after the Chinese occupation of Tibet in the new monastic university of Drepung, which was re-established in India.

In 1970, he obtained the highest degree of "Geshe", or Doctorate in Buddhist sciences, from the monastery of Gyuto, which was also re-established in India in Dalhousie, Himachal Pradesh.

Since 1961, Professor Samdhong Rinpoche, an eminent scholar, has had important functions in different Tibetan schools: Simla, Darjeeling and Dalhousie.

In 1971, he was appointed Principal of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Vanarasi in India, and later appointed as Director of the Institute since 1988.

Since 1994 Ven.Prof.S.Rinpoche remained associated with the Association of Indian Universities(AIU) as a member of its Standing Committee; Vice-President and later elected as President of the AIU for the year 1998.

Ven.Prof.S.Rinpoche was also, from 1970 to 1973, Vice-President of the Tibetan Youth Congress. Presently he assumes different administrative tasks in request of the Tibetan Government-in-exile and the Indian government: By appointment of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he is:

*1. Member of the Central Tibetan Schools' Administration (CTSA) in New Delhi. *2. Deputy Chairman of the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives (LTWA) in Dharamsala, H.P.

By appointment of the Indian Government, he is:

*3. Member of the Executive Board of the Indian Council for Philosophical Research (ICPR). *4. Member of the Executive Board of the Asiatic Society, Calcutta.

In the meantime, Professor Samdhong Rinpoche is: *5. Member of the Executive Board of the Krishnamurti Foundation in India. *6. Counselor at the World Peace Council, USA. *7. Advisory Member of the Institute of Asian Democracy in New York. *8. Trustee Member of the Foundation for Universal Responsibility of H.H.the Dalai Lama, New Delhi.

Moreover, Professor Samdhong Rinpoche is responsible for the entire publications of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies(Deemed University). He has published over sixty articles and interviews in different university publications and in the press.

Professor Samdhong Rinpoche is fluent in: Tibetan, English and Hindi.

BRÈVE BIOGRAPHIE

Le Professeur Samdhong Rinpoché est né le 5 novembre 1939 au Tibet, à Nagdug, village de la province de Kham. Il a accompli toutes les étapes d'ordination de moine et porte le titre de "Bhiktchou Mahathéro". Ses études monastiques, commencées en 1951 au Tibet à l'Université de Drépoung, se poursuivirent, après l'occupation du Tibet par la Chine, à la nouvelle Université monastique de Drépoung, réinstallée en Inde. En 1970, il a obtenu le diplôme correspondant au plus haut degré de "Guéshé", c'est-à-dire de docteur ès sciences bouddhiques, au monastère tantrique de Gyuto, réinstallé en Inde également, à Dalhousie.

Éminent érudit, le Professeur Samdhong Rinpoché a, depuis 1961, occupé d'importantes fonctions dans divers lycées tibétains : Simla, Darjeeling et Dalhousie. En 1971, il fut nommé directeur à l'Institut Central des Hautes Études Tibétaines à Bénarès en Inde et, depuis 1988, y exerce les fonctions de Directeur.

Depuis 1994, il a fait partie de l'Association des Universités Indiennes (AIU) en tant que membre de son Comité permanent, puis Vice-Président, et il en a finalement été élu Président en 1998.

Parallèlement à ces fonctions universitaires, le Professeur Samdhong Rinpoché fut, de 1970 à 1973, vice-président du Congrès de la Jeunesse Tibétaine.

Il assume actuellement diverses charges administratives à la demande du Gouvernement tibétain en exil et du Gouvernement indien :

Sur nomination de Sa Sainteté le Dalaï Lama, il est :

1. Membre du Conseil d'administration des Écoles Tibétaines (CTSA) à New Delhi. 2. Vice-président de la Library of Tibetan Works & Archives (LTWA) à Dharamsala.

Sur nomination du Gouvernement indien, il est :

3. Membre du Directoire du Conseil Indien pour la Recherche Philosophique (ICPR) 4. Membre du Conseil d'administration de l'Asiatic Society, à Calcutta.

Le Professeur Samdhong Rinpoché est également :

5. Membre du Directoire de la Fondation Krishnamurti en Inde. 6. Conseiller à la World Peace University, Etats-Unis. 7. Membre consultatif à l'Institute of Asian Democracy à New York. 8. Membre du Conseil d'administration de la Fondation pour la Responsabilité Universelle à New Delhi.

En outre, le Professeur Samdhong Rinpoché est responsable de l'ensemble des publications de l'Institut Central des Hautes Études Tibétaines. Il a lui même publié une soixantaine d'études et d'entretiens dans diverses revues universitaires et de presse écrite.
