The dialogue with the European Union and Italy should be conditioned to the liberation of all political prisoners.
Rome, August 11th 2007 Press Release by the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty "The Radical Party acknowledges that the Cuban authorities put the Cuban political prisoner and member of the Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnational and Transparty Francisco Chaviano on probation yesterday in Cuba, after 13 years of prison." Francisco Chaviano had been condemned to 15 years of prison for his activity in defence of human rights in Cuba and today he is put on probation after 13 years of hard prison – two years before the end of his imprisonment – during which his health conditions worsened a lot. The probation should have been granted a few months ago, according to the law on the reduction of punishment in force in Cuba.
On March 18th 2007 the Radical Party demonstrated with Maria Fida Moro, MaurizioTurco, Matteo Mecacci, Marco Cappato and Elisabetta Zamparutti in L'Habana side by side with the "Damas de Blanco" to ask for the liberation of all political prisoners in Cuba, pointing out the story of Francisco Chaviano in particular (link to the press release of march 18th http://coranet.radicalparty.org/pressreleases/press_release.php?func=det... ). On April 20th, Aguililla Saladrigas, Francisco Chaviano's wife, wrote to the radical leaders confirming the will of Francisco Chaviano and hers to continue being a member of the Radical Party and thanking them for the initiative undertaken in favor of her husband's liberation (the full text of the letter is attached to the press release). The Radical party, acknowledging the decision of the Cuban Government to put Francisco Chaviano on probation, as it had acknowledged that the radical leaders had been allowed to publicly demonstrate in Havana on March 18th – reaffirms that the liberation of more than 200 political prisoners currently imprisoned in Cuba mast be a primary condition in the policy of dialogue that the European Union and Italy are willing to establish with Havana.
