Unpo

On the occasion of “The 2005 Anniversary Commemoration of Ogoni Martyrs”, UNPO General Secretary, Mr. Marino Busdachin is visiting Port Harcourt to join in commemoration with the Ogoni people.
UNPO MESSAGE OF SOLIDARITY
Dear Friends, Brothers and Sisters,
On behalf of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) I convey to you a message of unity and solidarity with the Ogoni people from the more than sixty UNPO Members representing over 250 million peoples worldwide. As you are now gathered in commemoration, ten years have passed, since the people of Ogoni lost a remarkable man, Ken Saro Wiwa, brutally executed, along with John Kpuinen, Barinem Kiobel, Paul Levura, Daniel Gbokoo, Nordu Eawo, Saturday Doobee, Baribor Bera and Felix Nuate - a loss, not only to a community, but a loss to all nations and peoples engaged in peaceful struggles around the world. Ken Saro Wiva, was a man of profound national and international recognition, who managed to peacefully mobilise the Ogoni community in the name of justice, democracy and the promotion of civil, economic and environmental rights. The man referred to “as the one who can be trusted”.
The tragic death of Ken Saro Wiva, Chairperson of the UNPO General Assembly, signified the loss of a highly valued and prominent figure of our organisation. We join with you in spirit today, in respect and commemoration of him and all the others who have lost their lives in the course of the courageous struggle for justice and freedom of the Niger Delta peoples. We recognize their immense contribution in promoting non-violent means for social transformation and environmental protection.
The cause of self-determination, to which Ken Saro Wiva and the people commemorated today, was so strongly committed, represents an aspiration which stands central to the struggles of UNPO Members worldwide. It is a notion that entails that human beings, individually and as groups, should be in control of their own destinies. Inseparably linked to the core concept of democracy, self-determination is a right of choice and a right of participation. To this end, UNPO stands in unity with the Ogoni people, and honours the work of all defenders of human rights and freedom worldwide, in their work to advance the causes of justice and self-determination.
At this time of commemoration, we should all feel empowered by the legacy and strong testimony of the lives of Ken Saro Wiva and his fellowmen. The peaceful struggle, in which they were engaged, must continue in their names. Let us draw strength from each other in our journey for acknowledgement as we stand together today, not only to commemorate Ken Saro Wiva and his fellows, but to renew our commitment to the causes they dedicated themselves to, - with the same strong spirit and passionate hearts.
In Solidarity,
Marino Busdachin General Secretary
