UN: IN JULY 1998, AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT TO PROSECUTE WAR CRIMES WILL BE CREATED. ROME WILL HOST DIPLOMATS FROM 185 MEMBER STATES OF THE UNITED NATIONS FOR THE CONFERENCE OF PLENIPOTENTIARIES THAT WILL ADOPT THE STATUTE OF THE PERMANENT TRIBUNAL
New York, December 16. 50 years have passed since the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials, in 1998 the dream of an international permanent court will become reality. Yesterday, the 52nd Session of the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution that sets the date and the place for the Diplomatic Conference of Plenipotentiaries: Rome June - July 1998.
It is a first effective victory for the Transnational Radical Party and No Peace Without Justice International Committee, that together with the NGOs of the International Coalition for the Court are fighting against impunity for the perpetrators of heinous crimes against humanity.
Without doubts the world will have an International Criminal Court by next Summer, but the question on its effective independence from the Security Council remains opens.
In order to achieve this objective the Transnational Radical Party re-launches its international campaign "There is no peace without justice" to mobilize parliamentarians, members of Governments and the public for the actual establishment of such an independent institution that will work as a powerful deterrent against current and future conflicts.
