Statement by Marco Pannella MEP on the execution of Saddam Hussein

Should the execution of Saddam be cancelled, or even suspended, Saddam might be tried for other crimes, more serious than the one (unclear and unfair) that he has already undergone. He should be tried for the aggression on Kuwait, which was condemned both by the United Nations and the international community. He should also be tried for the massive and enduring use of forbidden weapons and for the massive killings against Iranians and against the populations of Iraq.
In this way, if the execution wanted by Washington and by President Bush was cancelled, we might be and we might have been able to learn from Saddam's defence one story, many stories, like those linked to the complicity beyond suspicion enjoyed by the dictator and from which he was incited and armed. Thus, we offer a Martyr to international terrorism.
To kill Saddam is to shut the mouth of the accomplice. We export hopeless barbarity worldwide.
Long live Saddam!
