STATEMENT OF THE COORDINATING COMMITTEE OF THE "RUSSIAN RADICALS" IN CONNECTION WITH THE ASSASSINATION OF THE PRESIDENT MASKHADOV

Coordinating Committee of the Liberal and libertarian movement "Russian Radicals", met for its extraordinary session in Moscow on March 15, 2005, with participation of its members Pavel Brukhis, Sergey Kuznetsov, Darya Ladur, Sergey Lamekin, Andrey Rodionov, Sergey Sorokin, Susanna Tsaturyan, the Secretary and the Treasurer of the movement, and invited to the session Sergey Nevsky, in connection with the assassination by the Russian forces of the President of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria Aslan Maskhadov, expresses its sincere and deep condolences to the relatives of the deceased, and to all the people of Chechnya who elected him to the post of the head of the republic during free and democratic election under international control;

considers that the assassination of the only one undoubtedly legitimate leader of the Chechen people who personified the moderate, pro-Western forces, who always resolutely condemned fundamentalist terrorist methods of the fundamentalist and extremist wing of the Chechen Resistance, who proposed a peace plan providing intervention of the United Nations and until his end called the Kremlin for negotiations, is a tragical event not only for the Chechen, but also for the Russian people, for all those who seek a fair political solution of the Russian-Chechen conflict;

expresses its indignation with a real "dance around the corpse" developed in the controlled by the Kremlin mass-media and the campaign of slander in respect of the assassinated Chechen president Aslan Maskhadov;

in conditions when the assassination of the president Maskhadov has obviously led to the strengthening of the fundamentalist and terrorist wing headed by Shamil Basayev, expresses its hope that the entourage of the president Maskhadov - starting from the Minister for Foreign Affairs Ilyas Akhmadov and the general representative of the president abroad Umar Khanbiyev - will have sufficient force to keep and support the course to which the president Maskhadov was devoted up until his last minute;

confirms the commitment of the "Russian Radicals" within the framework of the campaign in support of the peace plan of Maskhadov-Akhmadov for establishment of an interim UN administration in Chechnya.
