Pnom Phen, 24 August 2006
Starting from tomorrow August 25th and until the end of the month Marco Pannella (MEP and President of the TRP Senate) and Matteo Mecacci (TRP Representative at the UN) will visit the Cambodian capital Pnom Phen.
The mission follows the launch of the "Manifesto-Appeal for a First World Satyagraha for Peace - No Peace Without Justice, Freedom and Democracy". During the visit a meeting will be held with 21 Cambodian MPs from the Sam Rainsy Party (Opposition Party in Cambodia) who joined the Transnational Radical Party for 2006.
Tomorrow August 25th Pannella and Mecacci will take part to the constitution of the Cambodian Parliamentary Caucus for Democracy in Burma, co-ordinated by Son Chhay (Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Cambodian Parliament and member of the Transnational Radical Party) and attended by representatives from the Democratic League of Aung San Su Khi in the Burma Government in exile - legally elected in 1990 before the coup of the Burmuse military junta.
On August 26th Pannella and Mecacci will meet representatives from the Khmer Krom community in Cambodia. The Khmer Krom are an indigenous Khmer ethnic people coming from South Vietnam, that has suffered years of political, cultural and economic discrimination from the Vietnamese regime.
On August 27th the Transnational Radical Party will organize a meeting with 21 Cambodian opposition MPs who joined TRP for 2006. The meeting will be held at the Sam Rainsy Party seat in Pnom Phen, 71 Sothearos Boulevard.
On August 28 Pannella and Mecacci will hold talks with the representative of the High Commissioner for Refugees in Cambodia, Thai Thamrongsak Meechubot, in order to discuss the conditions of Montagnards refugees in Cambodia and the UN policies put in place on the matter. In the last few years the Transnational Radical Party has repeatedly opposed the illegality of some decisions taken by the UNHCR in Cambodia, that determined the forced deportation of ethnic Montagnards refugees from Cambodia to Vietnam in violation of the 1951 Convention for Refugees.
More meetings will be announced when confirmed.
