PRIVACY / EP: RADICAL MEPs EXPRESS SATISFACTION AT THE APPROVAL OF THE RESOLUTION ON TRANSFER OF DATA TO THE US
Tweet
Strasbourg, 31st of March 2004
Declaration by Marco Cappato, Radical MEP of the Lista Bonino and former EP rapporteur on privacy:
"Radical MEPs of the Lista Bonino express great satisfaction at today's EP approval by a tight vote (229 in favour, 202 against, 19 abstentions) of the resolution on transfer of passengers' data to the US authorities, drafted by Mme Boogerd-Quaak. The resolution affirms that the decision by the Commission to declare the US regime on privacy "adequate" is wrong, that the Commission has gone beyond its executive powers, and consequently invites the Commission to withdraw the adequacy-finding decision. It furthermore states that the EP could decide to ask the Court of Justice for an opinion on the legality of the draft international agreement with the US.
We believe that today the EP has courageously - and against strong pressures from the Commission, national governments and the US - stood up to its role of representing citizens and defending their rights and freedoms, democracy and the rule of law."
