Statement by Nikolaj Khramov, secretary of the "Russian Radicals"
Moscow, June 25, 2004
Fully sharing the conviction of Lev Ponomaryov and other human rights activists of the necessity to create on the basis of the human rights movement of Russia of a political party which could, by participation in elections, to influence the formation of the political agenda, I have accepted the invitation of the initiators of creation of the Party For Human Rights and have joined the Organizing Committee of this future political subject.
Moreover, I am convinced that the future Party For Human Rights is called to fill the libertarian and anti-etatist political niche which is empty today in our country. In other words, it should be the first party in Russia supporting radical expansion of the space of freedom - both personal and economic - from the uncompromising "antistate" position: though it were the struggle for the international intervention with the purpose to put an end to the criminal Chechen war, or the political expression of the demand of more than 70 per cent of the Russian citizens about abolition of conscription slavery, or the struggle against the failed, criminogenous and criminal prohibitionist policies in respect of drugs and immigration, or fight for new human rights - such, for example, as the right to euthanasia.
From this point of view, I perceive, however, a serious danger that the future party of individual freedoms, not having been born yet, will experience the most serious temptation by populism, failing to resist the temptation to rush into a reddish mess of the "struggle for social rights" and for preservation of paternalist "guarantees" on the part of the so-called "social state". The evident testimony of such danger are scheduled for the first of July demonstrations of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation and Yabloko (with some quite demagogical slogans) against the governmental bills on replacement of natural privileges with monetary compensations, where unfortunately some human rights organizations take part, whose representatives simultaneously initiate the process of creation of the Party For Human Rights.
