PANNELLA: TONIGHT I WILL START A HUNGER AND THIRST STRIKE TO CALL ON THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT TO MOBILIZE THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY IN ORDER TO STOP THE EXECUTION OF SADDAM HUSSEIN

MOREOVER, SADDAM HUSSEIN, IF KEPT ALIVE, COULD BECOME AN ESSENTIAL INSTRUMENT TO PACIFY AND DELEGITIMIZE THE “ARMY”, MADE UP OF GANGS OF ASSASSINS, THAT IS COMMITTING CONTINUOS MASSACRES OF THE IRAQI PEOPLE WITH IMPUNITY.

Rome, December 26, 2006

Once again, I call on the Italian Government, as I already did on the occasion of the first death penalty sentence against the Iraqi dictator, to immediately and seriously commit itself to avoid the imminent execution of Saddam Hussein. If this execution would take place, the Iraqi Government would carry on an infamous decision, similar to those undertaken by Saddam Hussein, and unworthy of a democratic and civilized country.

In 2003, despite the vote by a large majority of the Italian Parliament calling for the exile of Saddam Hussein as an alternative to the war, and for a free Iraq, both the Italian Government and the parliamentary opposition, did not follow up to that vital decision. Saddam Hussein was aware of our initiative. He could remember it now with gratitude and regret for not accepting it. IN SUCH A CASE, A LIVING SADDAM HUSSEIN, COULD BECOME AN ESSENTIAL AND UNIQUE INSTRUMENT TO PACIFY AND DELEGITIZE THE “ARMY”, MADE UP OF GANGS OF ASSASSINS, WHICH IS COUNTINOUSLY COMMITTING MASSACRES AGAINST THE IRAQI PEOPLE.

This is an extraordinary occasion, to make literally explode in the hearth of the Middle East and in the world, an immense act of peace and a debate among the peoples and consciences, the scandal of nonviolence as an alternative to dictatorships and to the war; a war that now, more than ever, is impending on humanity.

I call on the Italian Government to support the nonviolent mobilization of Hands off Cain and the Transnational Radical Party, towards the First World Satyagraha for Peace; a mobilization that has, among its objectives, the defense of Saddam Hussein’s life and the request to the United Nations to adopt a universal moratorium on death penalty.

Personally, I wish to reiterate my offer to go to Baghdad, and everywhere would be necessary, to obtain a pardon that would convert the death penalty for Saddam Hussein to 30 years in prison.

WITH THIS AIM, I WILL START TONIGHT A THIRST AND HUNGER STRIKE.
