PANNELLA – FLAVOUR OF PRAGUE AND MOSCOW IN THE CONTROVERSIES OF THE GUE AND THE COMMUNIST REFOUNDER COLLEAGUE CATANIA: WHAT WOULD THEY HAVE WANTED FROM FRATTINI, AN ACT OF ABJURATION, HARBINGER AS IT IS OF THE PERFORMANCES OF THE THIRD INTERNATIONAL?

THE PROBLEM IS NOT AT ALL FRATTINI BUT, IF ANYONE, BARROSO.
THE LIBERALS SHOULD WATCH AGAINST THE RISKS BRUSSELS GOING ADRIFT TOWARDS TODAY’S LISBON, COUNTER-REFORMIST, REPRESSIVE, VATICAN MORE THAN EUROPEAN

Strasbourg, 16 November 2004 – Declaration by Marco Pannella:

“The strongly controversial declarations against the candidate Commissioner Franco Frattini by the GUE and colleague Giusto Catania, Communist refounder, have the stale taste of communist justice which for decades prevailed not only in Prague but in many parts of the world.
Franco Frattini is notoriously neither an ideologist nor a party man. His declarations, intentions and commitments cannot be decently put in doubt.
He was loyal to the Berlusconi government and remains so, refusing today to analyse those actions politically. Everything lets us hope that he will continue to be loyal in the new responsibility of European “government”, of which he will be part quite probably from Thursday.
What is expected today, as was rightly not expected at all from Rocco Buttiglione: a formal act of abjuration? The problem today – as during and after the success of Rocco’s gigantic persecution story (antireligious, antichristian, anti-Catholic, anti-liberal, etc.), institutionally put to death (!) by none other than “his brothers” – remains Barroso. During these months President-designate Barroso did not at all, anything but, come up to our hopes and expectations, for which we sustained him with the great majority of the liberal and democratic group at his first presentation to the EP.
By now it seems clear to me that Barroso, no matter what our vote is, has been co-opted even by the actual power of the parliamentary party-dominated bureaucracy.

In his commission there are eight liberal commissioners. We hope that they will know how to win over to the commission that spirit and those liberal and lay choices, therefore also Christian choices, that otherwise would cause us to fear a Brussels trend towards Lisbon, in many ways still Vatican and counter-reformist rather than European, reformist and liberal.
