Dear Matteo,

I was released the Saturday before last, Dec 16. I'm doing all right.

I want to thank you for your continued support. I strongly believe that Singapore, more than any other country, is affected by international censure, at least much more than they publicly let on. The statement that you wrote and issued would have made much difference and I thank you. We've posted in on our website

Just to let you know that unlike on the four previous occasions when I was imprisoned, my treatment this time was a little different. Firstly my food tray was marked and after I consumed the food, I experienced very uncomfortable effects such as intense nausea, dizziness and heightened auditory sensation. Later on, the lights in my cell were left 24 hours for the remainder on my jail term (9 days) making sleep almost impossible for me.

I have written to the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the above matters but have yet to receive any response from it (for details, please see

I am facing another trial next week for attempting to leave the country. There are also seven more charges against me for speaking without a permit that is due in February 2007.

More importantly, I am thrilled to inform you that while we were in prison, more than 20 Singaporeans conducted an historical Freedom Walk on International Human Rights Day on Dec 10. Given the circumstances, it took much courage and I am so proud of all of them. It looks like a nascent democracy campaign is shaping up. I hope that with your support it will continue to grow.

Once again, I thank you for all that you do to help us promote democracy in Singapore.

In solidarity,

Soon Juan
