Mecacci to lead OSCE election observation mission in Serbia


COPENHAGEN, 4 April 2012 – Italian parliamentarian Matteo Mecacci, special co-ordinator to lead the OSCE election observation mission in Serbia announced today he will lead a pre-election visit to Belgrade on 11 April.
The two-day visit will be the first OSCE PA visit to the country after the announcement of President Tadic’s resignation. Mecacci will meet with government officials, political party leaders and representatives of the media and non-governmental organizations.
Irish Deputy Prime Minister Eamon Gilmore appointed Mecacci as special co-ordinator to lead the OSCE election observation mission to the 6 May elections in Serbia.
Mecacci, who chairs the OSCE PA's Committee on Democracy, Human Rights and Humanitarian Questions, has participated in 11 OSCE election observation missions, most recently to the 5 March presidential election in Russia. He served as deputy head of the election observation mission to the presidential election in Kazakhstan last April.
Mecacci will be joined by OSCE PA Deputy Director for Field Operations Roberto Montella, who has extensive experience in the region having served for ten years in the OSCE Field Missions there, most recently as executive advisor to the head of the OSCE Mission in Serbia.
