Harn is the youngest son of Sao Shwe Thaike, the first president of the Republic of the Union of Burma from 1948 to 1952, and the last hereditary ruler of the Shan principality of Yawnghwe. Sao Shwe Thaike and General Aung San were the architects of the 1947 Panglong Agreement, which formed the basis for the modern nation of Burma.
