The European Commission, the executive arm of the European Union (EU), is to deploy Election Observation Mission (EOM) for the elections to take place in Afghanistan and Palestine. The EU's EOM to Afghanistan will be led by Emma Bonino, member of the European Parliament (MEP) and its Committee on Foreign Affairs, said a press release of the Commission on Monday. The elections in Afghanistan will be held on Sept. 18 for the lower house of the Parliament and provincial councils. Meanwhile, The EU EOM, headed by MEP Veronique de Keyser, will be deployed in early June for the elections to the Palestinian Legislative Council, currently scheduled for July 17. "Election Observation Missions are an important instrument for building confidence in the democratic processes of a country," EU Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner said in a statement. "I am convinced that our EOM will increase the transparency of the process through its presence and reporting," she added.
