Secretary of State
Dear Mr. President,
The Uyghur people around the world appreciates very much your administration's campaign against terrorism, and especially its thaugh stance against countries which have been misusing the international struggle against terrorism to supress peacefull political dissent or to justify its policy of crack down against ethnic and religious minorities.
One of such countries is the government of the Peoples Republic of China, and its Vice president Hu Jintao begins his first visit to Washington Today. China have been intensifying its policy of supression against ethnic minorities such as the Uyghurs and the Tibetans recently. Thus since the 11. September terrorist attacks against the U.S., thousands of Uyghur civilians detained, arrested, interrogated, hundreds sentenced to long term prison terms, and dozens have been executed for political reasons. International human rights organisations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch testify that the human rights conditions in China worsened last year and its harsh repression against the Uyghurs and Tibetans contineue.
The international community have been forthcoming in its quest of integrating the communist giant to the global democratic system by entrusting it to host the 2008 Olympic Games, offering WTO membership and persuing the way of dilalogue on human rights issues. Regretibly, but China sees all this gestures as weakness and have been trying to exploit it for many years. For example it has not ratified yet the international Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the European Union's policy of "dialogue" on human rights issues has brought nothing positive for the last three years.
Considering these facts, on behalf of the Uyghur nation, we call upon you, during your discussions with Mr. Hu Jintao, to step up pressure on Beijing government, to live up its international commitments on human rights, and ask him to stop the policy of ethnic cleansing against the Uyghur nation and launch a constructive dialogue with the real representatives of them to work out a political solution to the problem to contribute both to the wellfare of the Uyghur people, and regional peace and stability.
Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully yours,
Enver Can
President
