Cordially invites you to a discussion on
Women as a Revolutionary Force in the Arab World-A European's Perspective
Tuesday, April 5, 2005, 8:30-10:00 a.m.
Wohlstetter Conference Center, Twelfth Floor,
AEI 1150 Seventeenth Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20036
With democracy on the rise throughout the Muslim world, the issue of the role of women in Arab societies becomes more timely than ever. Many have argued that increased reform and democratization will improve the status of women in the region, but few have focused on the potential for women to act as a revolutionary force in democratizing the Arab world. How can Arab women contribute to spread democracy in their societies? What can Europe and the United States do to increase the political and social involvement of Arab women throughout the region? Please join the New Atlantic Initiative and Emma Bonino, resident of Cairo, member of the European Parliament and candidate to be the new United Nations commissioner for refugees, to discuss how the empowerment of Muslim women can contribute to democratizing the Middle East.
8:15 a.m.
Registration and continental breakfast
