CUBA/PANNELLA AND CAPPATO: “WE WELCOME THE NEWLY FORMED ALLIANCE OF DEMOCRATIC OPPOSITION. NOW THE EU HAS TO HELP THEM TO COMMUNICATE WITH THE CUBAN PEOPLE”.

Statement by Marco Cappato and Marco Pannella, Radical MEPs.

Rome, Brussels 18 April 2007

"We welcome, on behalf of Nonviolent Radical Party, an extraordinary positive event in Cuba: The agreement between democratic opposition movements to the Castro's regime, which eventually decided to unite their force on a public message “to the people of Cuba and to the people of the world”.
This document, called “Unidad por la libertad” has been signed by the most important democratic leaders such as Osvaldo Payà, Vladimiro Roca, Elisardo Sanchez and also by personalities that the Radical delegation met in Havana three weeks ago during our nonviolent action: The member of the Radical Party Martha Beatriz Roque, Laura Pollan and Mirian Lleiva from the “Damas de blanco” and the dissident journalist Oscar Espinosa Chepe.
The agreement “Unidad for la libertad” is a sign of a new phase for the opposition against the regime, not only for the importance of subscribers but also for the explicit appeal to a “pacific” struggle and the promotion of democracy and human rights. Now, every good willing person, in particular inside EU Institutions and in EU Member States, should concretely support this appeal: We have to help disseminate this message, prevent ostracism by the regime and make sure that the Cuban people will know about it."
