Cloning: International Ban Defeated at the UN

Dear friends and supporters,

We are delighted to report that the proposal to adopt an international convention to ban all forms of cloning has been killed at the Legal Affairs Committee of the UN General Assembly. In fact, the Committee adopted a resolution that contains an annexed “declaration on human cloning”, introduced by Italy, and set up a working group chaired by the Moroccan Ambassador to continue the consideration of a draft declaration on 14 and 15 February for its final adoption on 18 February 2005.

We wish to take this opportunity to thank all of you, and in particular the Genetics Policy Institute, for your support and active and effective participation in this campaign in favor of freedom of scientific research.

Of all the non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the United Nations, the Transnational Radical Party has been the only one that that has campaigned against the ban together with the Luca Coscioni Association, which last April launched the international mobilization that gathered the support of 73 Nobel Laureates, the endorsement of the Coalition for the Advancement of Medical Research, as well as hundreds of concerned groups and scientists worldwide.

But the struggle is not over yet.

Last October, the Luca Coscioni Association convened the founding session of the World Congress of Freedom of Scientific Research, which will have to start working at the beginning of 2005 .Tothisend,we are pleased to announce that the dates for the Congress of the Association have been set for January 14th to 16th and the World mobilization will be one of the priorities for the future.

The other major challenge is the referendum that has been presented in Italy, which, if it will receive the green light from the Constitutional Court by mid-January, will represent the bigger popular consultation (over 40 million people) on the issue of stem cell research. Knowing the political decisions that have characterized the jurisprudence of the Court over the last decade, we will need to be extremely vigilant on the entire process.

To be able to continue our mobilization in an effective way, we need your intellectual, political and financial support. You can email this message to friends, but you can also join the Association or the TRP or pledge a donation. We do not receive any governmental money and only rely only on individual contributions. Your support is greatly appreciated.

With our best wishes,

Luca Coscioni, President

Maurizio Turco, Treasurer
