CHINA, MECACCI: ITALY AND EUROPE SHOULD SUPPORT WEI JINSHENG'S APPEAL TO THE UN AGAINST THE SUSPENSION OF THE ARMS EMBARGO ON CHINA
Tweet
The Italian Parliament should hold a hearing for Chinese dissidents and should approve a motion against the suspension of the embargo.
Geneva, 26th of September 2006
Statement by Matteo Mecacci, Representative of the Transnational Radical Party at the UN, member of the Direction of Rosa Nel Pugno ("Rose in the fist") Party
It's essential that the Italian government and the European Union support the appeal that Wei Jinsheng, Chinese political dissident and member of the Transnational Radical Party, made today during the Council on Human Rights' session in Geneva, against the suspension of the arms embargo on the Chinese regime.
During a fringe meeting held today at Geneva in order to address human rights' situation in China, Wei Jinsheng emphasized the fact that any European decision to suspend the embargo would strengthen the most authoritarian and intolerant elements of the Chinese Communist Party, encouraging them to keep planning a war against Taiwan. Such a conflict would involve the United States as well as Europe, and it would be destined to destabilize the Asian continent.
It's essential, especially after that Prime Minister Mr.Prodi confirmed the Italian position in favour of the suspension of the arms embargo, a position already taken by former Prime Minister Mr. Berlusconi, that the Italian Parliament hold a hearing with many Chinese political dissidents, in order to adopt a resolution to oppose the executive's decision.
