Moscow, March 16, 2005. About forty people have taken part in today's demonstration to protest against criminal prosecution of organizers of the art exhibition "Caution: religion", organized by the movement "For Human Rights" in front of the building of the Office of General Prosecutor of the Russian Federation in Bolshaya Dmitrovka street. The activists of the movement "Russian Radicals" and the Transnational Radical Party (including the secretary of the "Russian Radicals" Nikolaj Khramov, the treasurer of the movement Anna Zaytseva, the chairman of the Coordinating Committee of the "Russian Radicals" Andrey Rodionov, the member of the Coordinating Committee Sergey Sorokin) have taken part in the demonstration, bringing to the building of the Office of General Prosecutor bundles of dry brushwood with a donative inscription: "To the Holy Office of Public Prosecutor for execution of justice to heretics". In the course of the demonstration the secretary of the "Russian Radicals" Nikolaj Khramov has stated: "We don't have any claims against authors of "blasphemous" works. Personally, I even didn't see these things. However they are called - works of art or disgusting hand-made articles - it has nothing to do with the matter. Of course, we also don't have any claims against the employees of Sakharov Museum who sheltered the seditious exhibition in their territory and now are subjected to criminal prosecution for it. We also don't have any claims against the Russian Orthodox Church (more precisely - against the Moscow patriarchy) because like any other group or the organization it has the right to dictate any norms of behaviour to those who recognize its right to do that, considering it a moral or religious authority to them. We even don't have claims against those who destroyed the exhibition - these banal hooligans should be investigated by the militia, the Office of Public Prosecutor and the court. But as citizens we have claims - and very serious ones - against the state in the person of the Office of Public Prosecutor which for our money and from our name carries out in this case criminal prosecution in respect of three citizens for improper attitude towards symbols of a certain religion, i.e. as a matter of fact, prosecutes them criminally for "blasphemy". Just like it was done by the Holy Inquisition in Middle Ages or by mullahs in power in Iran - today. Those who found themselves offended by those or other exhibits (or all the exhibition as a whole), have the right to lodge a claim in the court about compensation of moral harm - that's how it should be done in a secular rule-of-law state. Behind externally frivolous, mocking form of our action with brushwood there is the most serious concern about what is happening around this trial. The matter is that the Office of Public Prosecutor encroaches on the bases of constitutional system of our country which according to the Constitution is a secular rule-of-law state. We demand immediate termination of criminal prosecution in respect of Yury Samodurov, Lyudmila Vasilovskaya and Anna Alchuk".
