AFGHANISTAN: EU EOM CHIEF OBSERVER MEETS WITH PRESIDENT HAMID KARZAI AND TRAVELS TO JALALABAD

The Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) to Afghanistan, Emma Bonino, Member of the European Parliament, met with President Hamid Karzai on July 26th, 2005. Ms. Bonino presented to President Karzai the mandate of the Mission, as well as its composition and deployment scheme throughout the country (60 EU EOM long-term observers are due to arrive in Afghanistan in early August). President Karzai expressed his appreciation for the EOM’s contribution to the electoral process. On the same subject, Ms. Bonino also met with Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the day before.
Emma Bonino then travelled, on July 27th, to Jalalabad to assess the situation in view of deploying EU EOM long-term observers in Nangarhar Province. She met with the Governor, Gul Aga Sherzai, the outgoing Head of Tribal Affairs, Faraydoon Mohmand, the Head of the Border Police, Haji Zahir, as well as with Unama and Jembs international staff. The EU EOM Chief Observer is planning to visit other Provinces in the next days.
