AFGHAN WOMEN IN GOVERNMENT. STATEMENT BY EMMA BONINO.

The appointment of two women in the tranistional government of Afghanistan established in Bonn marks the end of a taboo and a starting point for a prompt restitution of all civil rights to the women of Afghanistan.

The decision taken by the leaders of the Afghan armed factions and by traditional leaders is the result of strong pressure applied by the international community, which in turn was alerted by the strong non violent opinion movement in favour of the Afghan women.

I take the opportunity to thank the over 6000 persons, from 103 different countries, that have participated to the "World day of fasting and non- violence for the participation of Afghan women in the transitional government" organised by the Transnational Radical Party".

The political pressure that our initiative has applied has to continue, as the road torwards the establishment of the rule of law in Kabul is still long and riddled with obstacles.
