39° Congress of The Nonviolent Radical Party, Transnazional e Transparty. Recomendation on "Demography and Environment"

The XXXIX Congress of PRNTT, held in Chianciano (SI) on 17-20 February 2011

Believes the non sustainability of the human, economic and social metabolism to be the emerging problem of the present time.

Such emergency expresses itself through the progressive depletion of fundamental mining and energy resources and the saturation of the earth ecosystems due to human activity waste with its consequences: pollution and global warming, an irreversible consumption of agricultural land, water, fishery zones and the reduction of biodiversity. The unfolding of these effects is leading to a mass extinction, death by hunger and disease affecting a large proportion of mankind, and mass migration flows. Moreover, it represents a growing danger for democracy as well as for social and international peace.

The root cause of this situation is the Demographic Bomb, against which Luigi de Marchi called for a general mobilization; according to De Marchi, this should have been a top priority on the political agenda.

The past delay in fighting this battle, as Aurelio Peccei and the Club di Roma had emphasized back in the early seventies, is turning into the compelling need to introduce policies aimed at mitigating the effects of overpopulation and consumerism, with an implicit need to revisit both the development model and the demographic policies pursued to this day.

In the light of the above, the XXXIX congress of PRNTT requests the management bodies to convene by the second congress session, a study commission on the issue of the soft comeback of a human economic and social metabolism within sustainable limits, to then recommend any resulting political goals.
