Presentation of the written proceedings of the Brussels Conference “Rule of Law vs. Reason of State”

On 22 October 2014, the Written Proceedings of the Conference held in February in Brussels “Rule of Law v Reason of State” will be presented at the House of Commons in London. After ten years of campaigning mainly at the European Parliament and in Italy, the Nonviolent Radical Party together with No Peace Without Justice is returning to London, to the roots of their campaign, to take the next step aimed at restoring trust in democracy and the Rule of Law.

1. What measure is Italy adopting to fully respect articles 7 and 14 of the ICCPR?

In January 2013, the European Court of Human Rights adopted a “pilot sentence” on Italy asking the government to adopt a series of legislative remedies to address the systemic violation of article 3 of the ECHR in the national penitentiary institutions. Despite the fact that the recurrents were coming from two penitentiaries, the European Court stated that “inhuman and degrading” treatments are a structural problem throughout the country.
