Dear Mr. President,

Amid the recent evidence of a planned crackdown in the run up of the Olympic Games and China's record on human rights, there is growing concern among Uyghur people whether China is entitled to host the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. One of the promises made by the Beijing authorities was that the human rights situation would improve, but there is no evidence to suggest that the policies will change. There is plenty evidence to show that the Chinese government will violate the trust of the IOC to legitimize it's continued policies that are contrary to international standards of behavior and oppose the ideals of the Olympic Movement.

The recent report of authorities in Jilin province that was announced by the Committee for Investigation on Persecution of Religion in China and the Free China Movement is some of the emerging evidence of how will China try to exploit the trust of the international community to host the Olympics.

The Peoples Republic of China has exploited the international struggle against terrorism to justify its policy of harsh repression against ethnic and religious dissent both in East Turkestan, Tibet and China proper; China has made no movement yet to ratify the International Covenant on Political and Civil Rights; the European Union's dialogue with China "On Human Rights Field" has born no positive results yet and those responsible for the Tiananmen massacre and other serious crimes against ethnic and religious groups have not brought to trial and the population of labor camps are steadily increasing.

In short, since the IOC has decided to award the 2008 Olympics to Beijing China had taken no single step to satisfy the expectations of international community regarding human rights.

In light of such developments, we kindly ask the International Olympic Committee to meet as early as possible, in accordance with its commitments, to discuss measures to compel China to satisfy international expectations and respect human rights while preparing itself to host the 2008 Olympic Games. Otherwise, a serious search for an alternate venue must be started so as not to compromise the ideals of the Olympic Movement.
Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully yours,
Enver Can
